InsideVandy’s Zooey Deschanel Q&A

InsideVandy, Vanderbilt University’s newspaper, has a interview with Zooey Deschanel on She & Him:

When you think of music and Zooey Deschenel, “Baby it’s cold outside” probably is the first tune that comes to mind. But this twenty-something knows the cheer that can be spread by singing loud for all to hear isn’t confined to the holiday season, and recently Deschanel teamed up with M. Ward to form the indie-pop duo She & Him. While she and her partner didn’t win the Woodie they were nominated for, the band is on the rise and doing more than just wasting their musical talent in the shower. Recently, Deschanel sat down to talk with Culture Editor Courtney Rogers about what it’s like being a part of the music industry and finding that ever-illusive balance. [read more]

Paste Magazine: “M. Ward talks new solo album, She & Him Volume Two”

Posted on October 9, 2008

mwardpaste

Paste Magazine has an interview with Matt where he talks about Volume Two (“Zooey has about a gazillion brand new awesome songs” … sweet) and his new album:

It’s been a little over two years since M. Ward released his last solo album, Post War, but the singer/songwriter/producer has been anything but idle in the interim. He’s released an EP, lent his guitar, voice and/or production skills to more than a few artists covered in Paste, contributed to a trio of film soundtracks, made his acting debut, and become a world-famous pronoun, alongside Zooey Deschanel.

She & Him on Sound Opinions Podcast

Posted on August 17, 2008

Check out She & Him’s interview and live performance on Chicago Public Radio’s Sound Opinions podcast here. [thanks foobar]

This week’s guests are She & Him, the “she” being actress Zooey Deschanel and the “him” being musician Matt Ward, known to fans as M. Ward. The two met during the making of the movie “The Go-Getter,” and quickly learned they were successful collaborators. She & Him’s first album Volume One, is a collection of songs written by Zooey, as well as a couple of covers. Zooey explains that she’s most influenced classic pop songwriting, much of which pre-dates rock and roll. You can hear the country, doo-wop and Brill-building influence on the duo’s music as they perform their songs “Take It Back” and “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” as well as two bonus tracks.

Metromix Detriot: “Zooey sings!”

Posted on July 22, 2008

There’s a short interview with Zooey at Metromix Detriot:

Early on in the video for She & Him’s “Why Do You Let Me Stay Here?”, singer Zooey Deschanel collapses into a pool of cartoon blood. The ghost version of Deschanel then does everything from sidestepping in cowboy boots to using a cartoon axe to chop off the heads of four stationary versions of herself.

From other artists, this might appear twisted. But even ghastly imagery is somehow charming when it features the immensely likable 28-year-old singer/actress, who’s starred in films such as “The Happening” and “Elf” and expanded her indie cred by forming She & Him with singer-guitarist Matt Ward (otherwise known as M. Ward). The duo’s debut, “Volume One,” showcases Deschanel’s thin yet disarmingly pure voice amidst a slew of twangy original pop songs and a few covers, including a hauntingly somber rendition of “You Really Got a Hold on Me.”

A day before leaving L.A. to head out on tour, Deschanel spoke to us about keeping it real on stage and being the 95th hottest woman in the world.

While we were on the set of Zooey Deschanel’s upcoming flick “500 Days of Summer,” in which she co-stars with Joseph Gordon-Levitt, we couldn’t resist asking Zooey some questions about our favorite guy-girl group, She & Him. The group, if you’re not aware, pairs singer-actress Deschanel with indie folk darling M. Ward, and the duo’s disc, Volume One, was released this spring.

Men’s Vogue: “Actress Zooey Deschanel is the antistarlet”

Posted on June 4, 2008

antizooeyMen’s Vogue has an  article praising the wonderfulness that is Zooey:

The whole idea of Zooey Deschanel — the quality that gets movie critics calling her quirky and directors calling her day and night — is that she’s the antistarlet. No entourage, no attitude, no nonsense. For our teatime rendezvous, she chooses a restaurant on a fringe of downtown Manhattan so obscure that the neighborhood doesn’t have a name. She tiptoes in looking like a graceful version of boho-chic 28-year-olds found everywhere from Brooklyn to Silver Lake, with an Obama button on her vintage coat and The New Yorker rolled up in her pocket. She’s the literary type, right down to her idiosyncratic name, which her parents — who raised her mostly in L.A. — lifted from J. D. Salinger’s Franny and Zooey. “I waited a very long time before I read it,” she confesses. “What if I hated it? I read everything else of his first.”

The one thing Deschanel doesn’t want to read is her own reviews. “But sometimes my mother will call and read me things she deems fit,” she admits. We should hope that Mom (Mary Jo, an actress who appeared in “The Patriot,” which her husband, Oscar-nominated cinematographer Caleb, shot) has passed along the raves Zooey won for enlivening “Almost Famous,” “Elf” and too many indie flicks to count.
