Daily Telegraph: “Zooey trumps Lindsay, Britney”
Posted on May 24, 2008

The Daily Telegraph has an article on Zooey:
ZOOEY Deschanel isn’t in a hurry to be a Hollywood leading lady. But coming from a showbiz dynasty, the Deschanel family, she understandably still has great ambitions to succeed.
“I think it’s better to take a good supporting role than a bad leading role,” she said. “But I’d prefer a leading role if they’re equally good.”
Deschanel has been getting her wish. She is soon to star in the upcoming M.Night Shyamalan horror flick The Happening.
She was also chosen over Lindsay Lohan and Britney Spears to play Janis Joplin in the movie The Gospel According To Janis, although it is now on hold.
The 28-year-old recently played Casey Affleck’s wife, Dorothy Evans, in The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford.
Over the next year she will be seen alongside Jim Carrey in Yes Man, as well as Paul Dano in Gigantic and Joseph Gordon-Levitt in 500 Days of Summer.
Her other upcoming film projects include The Undeniable Charm Of Sloppy Unruh and Divorce Ranch. “I’m living the dream,” she said.
Deschanel is the daughter of Hollywood cinematographer Caleb Deschanel and Twin Peaks actress Mary Jo Weir. Her older sister, Emily, is also an actress who stars in the television series Bones.
But instead of using family ties to her advantage, the stunning brunette is working her own way to the top.
This is despite her parents being dismayed by her desire to follow in their footsteps.
“They might havegriped about it to other people, or subtly tried to steer me away, but I never took any notice,” Deschanel said.
Most of Deschanel’s movie roles have been support parts, but now she is proving that hard work really does pay off.
Thanks mostly to a role alongside school pal Kate Hudson in Almost Famous, Deschanel’s fame has been increasing and she has shown she is one to watch.
Deschanel is also good friends with Jake Gyllenhaal, with whom she also went to school at Santa Monica’s Crossroads School for Arts and Sciences.
“We all started around the same time,” she said.
“Kate was always very glamorous, even in school, and always nice and charming – a very warm person. Jake was always charismatic and funny.”
In the high-octane sci-fi disaster film, The Happening, the Bambi-eyed star takes the lead as Alma Moore, a woman on the run, opposite Mark Wahlberg.
The Happening was directed by Shyamalan, whose previous films have included The Sixth Sense, The Village, Signs and Lady In The Water.
“He is really smart and he knows exactly what he wants,” Deschanel said of the award-winning director.
Deschanel is also a budding musician, releasing her debut album this year.
She paired with Matt Ward for the indie-countrified pop release under the name, She & Him.
The pair met on the 2006 film The Go-Getter, which starred `She’ and featured original music by `Him’.
Deschanel had already displayed her musical prowess on the big screen when she sang a duet of Baby It’s Cold Outside with Will Ferrell in Elf.
“I love to sing and write music,” she said.
The Happening Opens nationally on June 12
