“Variety” Volume One Review

Posted on April 19, 2008

Variety Magazine has a short review of “Volume One”:

Avoiding the use of their already known names, actress-singer Zooey Deschanel puts her songs in the hands of guitarist M. Ward, who in turn gives them booming, echoey treatments that recall a glorious era in American pop. This is no lo-fi, campfire experiment that the quaint title suggests.

New York Times She & Him Article

Posted on April 16, 2008

The New York Times‘ Music section has an nice article on She & Him. An interesting note from the article is that Volume One has sold about 26,000 copies, which means its sales are “outpacing the debut of the duo’s labelmate Arcade Fire.”

Here’s the full article:

On screen the actress Zooey Deschanel is often cast as the quirky naïf or the ironic wit, the kind of character too flustered or too eye-rollingly impatient to multitask. But in real life Ms. Deschanel is a natural hyphenate, an actress-musician-crafty girl.

Now she is showcasing her harmony-loving side in a new band, She & Him, with the singer-songwriter-guitarist M. Ward. Their debut album, “Volume One,” is a collection of vintage-sounding country-tinged songs written mostly by Ms. Deschanel and produced by Mr. Ward. Released last month on the indie label Merge Records, it has received surprised acclaim from magazines and blogs alike.

LA Times “Barneys” Review and Quick Q&A With Zooey and Matt

Posted on April 16, 2008

ZooeyBarneys

The Los Angles Times Music Blog has short article about Zooey’s and Matt’s performance at Barneys New York:

Zooey Deschanel and her She & Him collaborator, M. Ward, looked so stylish together, it was befitting that they played surrounded by the latest fashion at Barneys New York. As the guest performers for last night’s party thrown by eco-friendly clothing line Loomstate and the Sundance Channel, the duo, who recently released their debut album, “Volume One,” played a five-song set. It was short but sweet enough to make me want to find some way into their two sold-out shows later this month at the Vista.

She & Him in “Filter Magazine”

Posted on April 14, 2008

Filter Magazine has a small article on She & Him, noting that “M. Ward’s countrified guitar is the ideal complement to Zooey’s delectably layered vocals. The slight vibrato in her voice (a la Rosemary Clooney) is supplemented with a dash of twang while the singalong ahhhs and background giggles peppered throughout the track evoke AM radio and the Shangri-Las.

“Too talented for words” – Zooey Blurb in Sydney Morning Herald

Posted on April 11, 2008

SMH001
The Sydney Morning Herald has a quick blurb about Zooey in a column about actresses-turned-musician:

Zooey Deschanel has always been a cult actress, her turns in Almost Famous or The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford too wry and understated to be typical Hollywood blockbuster material. So it seems apt that her debut album Volume One comes out of left field – a collection of impressively hummable country-tinged pop made with indie-folk star M Ward under the moniker She & Him. With the deliberately anonymous band name and an album title suggesting much more music to come, Deschanel is doing her best to sidestep the suspicious reception that usually greets a singing actress. And rightly so because the record, released last month, reveals Deschanel as an engaging performer with a warm, lilting voice and a real flair for songwriting – that is, someone for whom these stereotypes are both unhelpful and irrelevant.

She began writing music at the age of eight but her evolution into recording and performance was held back by a hectic film schedule and a few confidence issues. “I might be on location somewhere and I’d go home and I’d have my guitar and my little keyboard or something and write music,” Deschanel told NBC. “I’ve always been a late bloomer with a lot of things …”

The verdict With M Ward in tow (or possibly in thrall), Deschanel is blossoming into an impressive artist and her musical future seems assured.

C-VILLE Review of She & Him

Posted on April 8, 2008

CVilleLogo
C-VILLE, the Charlottesville News & Art newspaper, has a review on “Volume One.” The reviewer had many positive things to say about the album, concluding that “it’s just two souls in love with good ol’-fashioned pop music, and that love gives Volume One a warm glow to wrap around yourself on a chilly night.” Like a few other reviews, the reviewer found the weakest part of the album to be its covers. Fortunately, the reviewer found a lot to love about Zooey’s originals. Read the article here.
